So my landlord’s magic cure for the now building-wide bed bug problem was to call in a softball buddy of his. I didn’t have much choice but to see Rocco’s plan through while I shoved as many of my possessions as I could into storage. This I did with Lena and Ron, my downstairs neighbors, who were also afflicted.

To say it got surreal from here on in would be an understatement.

My landlord’s first reaction upon learning there were
bedbugs in three of four apartments was to lash out. Since I had been the first
one to find the things both times, I was within whipping distance. But as my
research had shown me, this was known among bed bug circles as the Bed Bug
Blame Game.

Things unraveled quickly after New Year’s 2010. Having declared myself bed bug free following a 2009 battle that had sucked up my entire summer, I had hesitantly started unpacking my possessions from the plastic bags around the holidays, despite a few suspicious-looking welts that started appearing much the way the water in the glasses had jiggled in Jurassic Park at the distant approach of the tyrannosaurus rex.
