All week long, we've been offering up our best tips for first-time buyers, including nine neighborhoods that might be good places to start a property hunt. Near to the top of our list was Forest Hills, a lush neighborhood in Queens that's known for its houses but also has a large cache of co-ops with starter apartments for the taking. (Forest Hills had 64 studios and one-bedrooms under $400,000, tied only with Riverdale for the top spot.) This weekend, you'll find plenty of both apartments and single-families hosting open houses—here's a sampling:
66-34 108th Street, Apartment 3G. Sitting well below the upper-end cutoff (under $400,000) for our best-neighborhoods-for-first-time-buyers measure, this 725-square-foot one-bedroom, one-bath is in a pet-friendly building. Asking price: $243,000. Open house: Sunday, April 9, 1 pm to 4 pm.
107-40 Queens Boulevard, Apartment 9C. This one-bedroom, one-bath is near four train lines and Austin Street's restaurant-heavy thoroughfare. Asking price: $453,000. Open house: Saturday, April 8, and Sunday, April 9, 12 noon to 2 pm.
117-29 Union Turnpike. This semi-detached Tudor townhouse has four bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a garage, and also has a separate laundry room. Asking price: $1.298 million. Open house: Sunday, April 9, 2 pm to 4:30 pm.
69-48 Groton Street. This 3051-square-foot brick Tudor has five bedrooms, five-and-a-half baths, and a garden, plus an exterior with plenty of charm. Asking price: $1.688 million. Open house: Sunday, April 9, 1 pm to 3 pm.
